Unplug so you can take time to Think

Your business needs your attention, your thoughts, your nurturing, and your creativity – the same goes for your family, and for your friends… So unplug yourself from time to time so you can be with the task at hand. You may think that you can answer a call while posting a listing in the MLS, as Facebook dings in the background; but I challenge you to experiment with the simple task of adding a listing to the MLS while you are so-called ‘multitasking’ and one with devices off for a few minutes – you will stun yourself.

I love the Internet;

I love Social Media;

I love our new digital landscape;

but are we distracting ourselves to death…???

Are you Multitasking Yourself to Oblivion?

This is not an argument that you should not have the best iPhone, iPad. or the new Droid Razr; it is a ‘thought experiment’ at putting those devices at arms length from time to time so you can process your task from start to finish, and in so doing discover new ways of thinking.

When you are at the Beck and Call of your devices everything is an emergency – which is simply not true. You stop giving yourself time to think; time to create…

Many have become very efficient and quite savvy at using their internet devices; but this is not a leap to saying that you have become Multitasking Diva – there is simply no evidence that it is so.

I have reviewed thousands of MLS entries and it is shocking the number of mistakes one encounters; think about this:

1. A Real Estate Listing is your way of having the loudest speaker in your community.

2. Glaring misspellings in the address fields – such as wrong State, wrong City, even wrong type of property.

3. Reusing the same description over and over again even if it does not apply to the property at hand. and lots of Typos…

I am sure you have come across many such mistakes – I am convinced that these errors are based on distractions; the inability for the realtor to stay with the task long enough to do it well.

Keep these thoughts in mind:

1. Pursue some of your important thoughts linearly to their fruition; don’t let your devices seduce you away from that which is in front of you; at least for the 10 to 20 minutes needed for the task to be completed.

2. Try once a day to immerse yourself in one task with no distractions… it will be hard at the beginning, but so satisfying.

3. When text message or email dings – give yourself 5 to 10 minutes before you look at it… Not every email or txt is going to change your life.

4. Notice how much Social Media and the Internet have become a filler for work you find tedious, or just plain boredom. (Don’t judge yourself – just notice it.)

5. Notice that these devices fill your day so you can avoid having a daily/weekly plan of action that is focused on prospecting and generating business.

6. finally – I challenge you to read for 15 to 20 minutes daily in one stretch; with all distractions off. You will love that time to yourself…

Make sure that you let technology assert your business and human values; and before you do so, do take the time to know what those values are!
