From Nanosticks to Cobol to Computer Science – Admiral Hopper is cool!

Admiral Grace Hopper (1906 – 1992) on the David Letterman Show, October 2nd 1986 giving him, a Nanostick; A Nanostick is a visual representation of the farthest distance light or electricity will travel in one Nanosecond. One Nanosecond is a billionth of a second – or a second cut up into a billion pieces. The length of a nanostick is nearly 1 foot.

You have got to watch this interview – this blog is especially chosen for my friend George Styron.

The wit and charm of Admiral Grace Hopper hides her deep knowledge of Computer Science; Grace wrote one of the first languages of Computer Science (Cobol) and in essence transformed the field. The quote below reveals that she saw beyond the vision of those of her time:

“I had a running compiler and nobody would touch it. … they carefully told me, computers could only do arithmetic; they could not do programs.”
